If anyone deserves a headline ripped from an obscure, poorly tested yet mildly amusing 1980s era Japanese arcade game, it’s the Unabomber.

Ted “Unabomber” Kaczynski, responsible for 3 murders and 23 injuries from 16 bombings between 1978 and 1995, has asked the US government for his bomb back. He’s crazy but not completely crazy. Kaczynski requested that the unused bomb and his seized writings be sent to the University of Michigan.

As Kaczynski puts it, “This Court should take into consideration Kaczynski’s interest, the public’s interest, and the interest of scholars and researchers in the knowledge to be obtained from the study of Kaczynski’s documents.” Such information, according to the Unabomber would allow the “true facts” of the Kaczynski case to come to light.

There really isn’t much more light to shed on the matter. The “true facts” are freely available over the evil technological monstrosity known as “the Internet.” The “true facts” are gruesome, sad and crystal clear.

Kaczynski went on a violent terror spree for 18 years targeting people that he believed were responsible for “technological progress.” Beyond computer scientists, the Unabomber held a hatred for geneticists, engineers and marketing executives.

As for Kaczynski’s papers and his bomb, let the University of Michigan researchers have it. There is no there there. Kaczynski deserves the death penalty. Kaczynski deserves to die the way he killed his victims.

Fortunately, Kaczynski is not going to be executed. As long as he can keep opening his mouth and continue writing letters, people will know that he has no glorified higher philosophy or vision of a better tomorrow. He is a lunatic. Unfortunately, there are at least a thousand more just as brilliant, disconnected and motivated for destruction.

The only useful information to come out of the Unabomber ordeal is that government law enforcement agencies are populated by territorial jackasses. Getting credit was more important than protecting Americans. This remains a fact to this day.
